At the Movies: Sept. 12
Theaters will look a little more lively this weekend with several wide releases aiming for decidedly different crowds:
“Burn After Reading” – the Coen brothers return with George Clooney in tow, along with Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton. The spy-thriller spoof revolves around a disk containing the memoirs of a CIA agent that end up in the hands of two unscrupulous gym employees (McDormand and Pitt). The duo use their discovery to blackmail a demoted government worker (Malkovich) and heads off on a dark romp. Really the only thing any movie goer needs to know about this movie is that the Coen Brothers made it. Buy your ticket immediately.
“The Family That Preys” – Tyler Perry’s latest movie stars Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard and Sanaa Lathan (and Tyler Perry, of course). It deals with two families facing scandals and secrets that might tear them apart. In the midst of it, old friends and matriarchs Charlotte Cartwright (Bates) and Alice Pratt (Woodard) head off on a cross-country road trip in hopes of ending the drama and rebuilding their connections. Total Oscar bait, but looks intriguing nonetheless.
“Righteous Kill” – A crime drama featuring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Carla Gugino. Two veteran New York City detectives (De Niro and Pacino) work to identify the possible connection between a recent murder and a case they thought they’d solved years ago. The detectives face the question of whether they put the wrong person behind bars and let a serial killer roam free. The buzz for this one is good if only for the long-awaited pairing of De Niro and Pacino.
“The Women” – a decided chick flick featuring Meg Ryan, Eva Mendes and Annette Bening, is a remake of the 1939 classic. Happily married Mary (Ryan) finds her world shaken when she discovers that her husband is cheating on her with store clerk Crystal (Mendes) and she is the last to know. Writer-director Diane English has been pounding out this script for more than a decade and got this cranked out on an indie budget. Looks awful similar to girl power movies that came before, but should do decent business.
