Jerry Lewis can bring it in

If you’re going to have a debilitating disease, go for muscular dystrophy. Apparently that’s where the money is. About $65 million this weekend.

The annual Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon set a new record this weekend during its 22-hour broadcast. This year Lewis also made a special plea for the estimated 5,000 MDA-registered families who were forced from their homes by Hurricane Gustav.

The show was host at the South Point hotel and casino in Las Vegas, Nev. Co-hoses included Ed McMahon (though it’s not known whether the cash-strapped star took any of his own donations), Tony Orlando (sans Dawn) and Nancy O’Dell.

The auction is still on with VIP TV experiences, a customized Harley, travel packages, sports memorabilia, electronics and more. It ends Thursday.

Jerry Lewis, however, will keep going and going and going and going…
