People want what’s on Palin’s bod
People may not be voting for Sarah Palin, but they are in favor of her fashion.
Coverage of the vice presidential candidate has boosted sales of her signature rimless eyeglasses. The eye wear is on back order, says Amy Hahn, VP of Italee Optics, Inc., the brand’s U.S. distributor.
The frames are designed by Kazuo Kawasaki (style series 704, color 34) and retail at $375. Orders for the frames have increased fourfold since the Republican National Convention and the company is manufacturing them around the clock.
“The next day, our phone started ringing off the hook,” Hahn told the Wall Street Journal. “Now we’re doing everything we can to keep up.”
It’s not just her face people are interested in – her feet are getting some attention, too. The Naughty Monkey brand red, peep-toe 3 1/2 inch heels saw a 50 percent increase in orders on Amazon.com.
The same Wall Street Journal quoted brand director Jay Randhawa as saying, “The age bracket we target is a little younger. It’s a very edgy, very hip, very street brand.”
The pumps, Randhawa added, were originally designed for 20-something club-goers like Paris Hilton.
Randhawa plans to send Palin some additional pairs of shoes and approach her about some kind of partnership. “We have to capitalize on it pretty soon,” he said.
Some companies, however, aren’t jumping on the Palin fashion bandwagon. Half kidding, Gov. Palin named Patagonia Inc. as one of her favorite designers, but company spokeswoman Jen Rapp said there were “absolutely no” plans to promote the association.
“Patagonia’s environmental mission greatly differs from Sarah Palin’s,” Ms. Rapp said. “Just wearing the clothing of an environmental company does not necessarily make someone an environmentalist.”
And let’s hope admiring the style of someone doesn’t necessarily translate into adhering to their political shtick.
