Helio Castroneves wins Indy 500

helioThis is one hell of a week for Helio Castroneves. Just two days after federal prosecutors dismissed the rest of the tax evasion charges against the driver and “Dancing with the Stars” champ, he won his third Indianapolis 500.

“I want to climb the fence!” Castroneves said as he pulled into Victory Lane. And so he did, getting past a yellow-jacketed security guard to pull his signature “Spiderman” move, scrambling up the fence and celebrating with the more than 250,000 fans in attendance.

“They were saying, ‘You have to go to Victory Lane’ … and this yellow guy was holding me,” Castroneves said. “I wanted to be with my fans. Then the whole team came, and I said, ‘I’m sorry, I want to get out there.’”

He and his pit crew jumped onto the fence along the main grandstand.

“This is incredible…the best month of May ever,” said the Castroneves, who had started Sunday’s 200-lap race in the choice pole position. “I think my tears speak for everything. What a great team. I just have to thank, first of all, the Lord for giving me this opportunity, to be strong, to have a family that I have. I have to thank (owner) Roger Penske … my guys … sponsors … everybody because they gave my life back. I’m here today because of those guys … and obviously the fans.

“I had to go to the fans because they never stopped sending me great messages. This is a great way to pay them back.”
