Everything you never wanted to know about Mel Gibson’s Catholicism

gibsonMel Gibson is going with judge not lest ye be judged. Apparently he skipped all those verses about not committing adultery. The famously Catholic actor asked his fellow parishioners at the Holy Family Chapel in Agoura Hills, Calif. to lay off the gossip. In the interest in minimizing the hypocrisy, however, he hasn’t been taking communion lately.

Gibson’s wife and mother of seven of his children, Robyn Moore Gibson, recently filed for divorce and Mel revealed he’s expecting a child out of wedlock with Russian musician Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva

People checked in with experts in traditionalist Catholicism (all our Catholic friends are lapsed) and according to them, Gibson is in some trouble.

They say that this branch of Catholicism, which rejects some of the more recent reforms, considers Gibson an adulterer and will remain on until he ends the affair and confesses his sin, making him ineligible for community.

The experts also say that he’s not eligible for an annulment since his marriage was consummated (we’re going to go with at least seven times) and no one appears to be mentally ill. He also has a problem because he was married in the mainsteam Catholic church, but the Vatican doesn’t recognize his current congregation.

He also may face trouble marrying Grigorieva since his congregation wouldn’t recognize a non-Catholic ceremony as legitimate. He’d need a special dispensation from a Catholic bishop to marry outside the church, not necessarily a hard thing to get.

As for the kid, he or she is safe and sound. A child is not considered at fault for the circumstances of his or her birth. The child could be baptized and brought up in the church.

Whew. And that, friends, is your mini-catechism lesson for the day.
