Judge orders Peter Falk into conservatorship
A judge placed former “Columbo” star’s Peter Falk in a conservatorship Monday to make sure his daughter could visit her ailing father. His wife, Shera, will stay in control of his personal care and affairs. A doctor testified Monday that the actor has advanced dementia, likely from Alzheimer’s disease.
Catherine Falk petitioned in December to take over her father’s affairs despite a somewhat volatile relationship with her father and stepmother. The court order will allow for a 30-minute visit with her father every other month.
Falk’s condition virtually ensures he will not remember the meetings, Dr. Stephen Read said. He has been slipping into dementia since late 2007,
Read first evaluated Falk in June 2008 before the actor was scheduled to undergo hip surgery. His dementia and apparent Alzheimer’s disease worsened after that procedure, and Read said Falk no longer remembers his signature role in the series “Columbo.”
