Director McG may have a fabulous Hollywood career, fame and fortune, but his life has been marred by tragedy. The director lost his brother last year to an overdose and gets angry when people assume he is living a charmed life.
It’s this loss that McG claims will stop him from being arrogant or complacent about his success, because his suffering keeps him grounded.
“I’ve been humbled enough by my own neuroses along the way. I’ve experience too much humiliation and depression and sadness. My brother died last year of a drugs overdose, which was the shittiest thing that ever happened to me.
“People always get the wrong idea about me. There’s this idea that I’m this sunny guy living in California, making little pop videos and f*cking beautiful women. my life isn’t like that,” he said.
It does have plenty of drama, however. McG was once headbutted by Bill Murray and the actor nearly broke the filmmaker’s nose.
The fight happened during the filming of “Charlie’s Angels” (not-so-shockingly Murray didn’t make a return appearance for the sequel).
McG said, “I don’t think there’s been a film I’ve made where there hasn’t been some kind of physical fight. I mean, I’ve been headbutted by an A-list star. Square in the head. An inch later and my nose would have been obliterated. I probably shouldn’t (reveal who it was).
“But it was Bill Murray. Y’know, it’s a passionate industry.”
