The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2011 – REVIEW

.

For the last five years, the VS Fashion Show was an annual event that gradually got worse with each passing year. The outfits got more ridiculous, the wings were WAY too much, the runway had way too many dancers, the music was TERRIBLE, and the models were getting lifeless.

Well, for the 2011 VS Fashion Show, I’d like to confirm that Victoria’s Secret finally got it RIGHT. They fixed a lot of the issues that plagued past shows (I’m looking at you, Kylie Bisutti) and kept the show strictly about beautiful women strutting their big asses down a glitter-filled runway.

The #1 issue I’ve had with the VS show since 2007 has been the actual show itself. With each year, the VS producers kept feeling the need to add on more flashy additions to the runway by adding dancers to every segment and making it seem like some low-rent cabaret show. This year, they remedied that issue and kept the runway dancer-free for most of the duration of the show (except for Nicki Minaj’s set).

Another issue they addressed was the music. Runway shows are all about using music that suits the kind of outfits the models are wearing. For the VS shows, the music was always some bullshit remix of various artists (like a remix of Gaga’s “Bad Romance” with LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out”) that never seemed to compliment the clothes being worn for any particular segment. For the 2011 show, they stuck with single songs and left out the techno-babble remixes.

As for the stage performances, it was “Okay” but not great. Katy Perry rocked last year’s show all by herself and this year’s show was a small letdown. Kanye performed “Stronger” in dedication to his mom, which was good but a bit dated. Maroon 5 performed “Moves Like Jagger”, which sounded HORRIFICALLY BAD. Adam Levine only seemed interested in dry-humping Anne Vyalitsyna, hence his bad singing and lack of “Jagger” moves. For the mid-section of the show, Kanye came back with Jay-Z and did an abridged version of “Niggas In Paris”, which was short enough to keep my attention. And lastly, Nicki Minaj performed (or actually semi-lipsynced) her song “Superbass”, which was a bit too much for me after the bad taste that Maroon 5 left in my mouth earlier in the broadcast.

Another issue that got resolved in this year’s show was the cutaways in-between each runway segment. Rather than try to show footage of famous people and their reason for being at the show, it was strictly more about the models. Sure, it does get a bit too “ass-kissy” as all the Angels practically do nothing but shower praises on each other but you have to remember, it’s about THEM not the celebrities!

Also, we were spared of any drama-filled reality show moments. In the 2009 show, nearly 50% of the show was dedicated to crowning a new “Angel” and was practically just a blatant rip-off of “America’s Next Top Model” only with bad editing. Thank god we didn’t have THAT anymore. And it really got my blood racing to see these models actually energized and smiling, which was something that was sorely missing from last year’s show.

One thing that was NOT fixed were the outfits. VS had a banner year in sexy outfits in the 2007 show but got WAY too excessive from there. Too many wings, too many bright colors, not enough lingerie! Are we forgetting that this is just a lingerie show? Since when did it have it to be this circus sideshow? Adriana Lima’s outfits were the worst of the bunch and Alessandra had the better set. Candice was nothing but Angelic in her outfits, though I wish I could say the same for the rest of the other models.

And one BIG issue that still gets me in a tizzy every year is the use of Slo-Mo. Yeah, I understand you want to catch the models as they turn and wink at the camera but it doesn’t have to be done EVERY time! It gets annoying to see these girls walk up to the camera, pose, and then have the camera slowly catch them as they turn around. It’s annoying as Hell and needs to be stopped! Don’t even get me started on the Slo-Mo kiss that Adam Levine gave Anne V!

The positives of the show far outweighed the negatives, which is a good sign that VS is actually learning from their past mistakes, though not all of them. As usual, the models were blazing hot, especially Candice, and the show wasn’t a complete waste as some people might believe. Believe me, I was ready to bash this show before even seeing it but after seeing the results of this one for myself, it left me with a bit of hope that next year’s show will finally be perfect.

Well, just as long as Candice flashes her ass cheeks at me.
