LA police say speed may have caused fatal crash involving Salma Hayek’s brother

Lt. Andrew Neiman told the Los Angeles Times that Salma Hayek’s 40-year-old Sami Hayek may have been going too fast on a twisty section of Sunset Boulevard when he lost control of a Ford GT on Sunday afternoon. The car reportedly fishtailed, crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a pickup truck. The crash broke Hayek’s ribs and killed his passenger, photographer and Grammy-winning art director Ian Cuttler Sala. The pickup driver suffered a broken foot.
Lt. Neiman says no drugs or alcohol were involved.

Bieber bodyguard and bus driver arrested for stealing photographer’s camera

After a concert in Sandy Springs, Georgia, north of Atlanta, a 32-year-old bodyguard for Justin Bieber got into a fight with a photographer, whom the bodyguard said got too close to Bieber. The bodyguard and a 49-year-old bus driver followed the photographer to a parking lot and took his camera. The two men were arrested as they were arriving at a house Bieber were arrested.

Great. Now we have bodyguards who appoint themselves as judges and juries. Granted, some paparazzi are no angels, but if the reports are true, I hope these two face very unsympathetic judges and juries. Further I wish that Justin Bieber would just go away, and if he insists on some form of self-destruction, please do so in a way that sucks in the fewest bystanders, hangers-on, confidantes and otherwise unsuspecting members of the general public.

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton separating

I’m no fan of Robin Thicke, so this comes easy: Paula is all kinds of delicious. Just take a look at the dress she wore at this year’s Clive Davis pre-Grammy party. http://www.celebutopia.net/forums/showthread.php?t=165393&highlight=Paula+Patton
Wow! Conclusion: Robin must be a rather high-level idiot to throw that away.

Minnie Driver starring in the new NBC series “About a Boy”. In an interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer on The Today Show, she says that she has watched the movie literally hundreds of times. “It is on television constantly and I also own the DVD.” Let’s hope that kind of appreciation translates to success.

I’m rooting for Minnie. I always want to like her, strange ad that may sound. Sometimes she ‘a very photogenic, but sometimes she just does not photograph so well. Then again, can’t we say that about all of us?

Selena Gomez – the latest celebrity rehab tale

21-year-old Selena Gomez, who has had an on-again/off-again relationship with Justin Bieber, was admitted to Dawn at The Meadows Recovery Centre in Arizona on January 5, and spent two weeks at the facility, which treats people aged 18 to 26 years old who are “struggling with emotional trauma, addiction or dual diagnosis concerns.”

Her representative tells MailOnline, “Selena voluntarily spent time at Meadows but NOT for substance abuse.”

Although her reps have denied this, Star claims that the singer was “heavily into the drug Molly (which contain MDMA)’ and was using prescription drugs like Xanax and Ambien. The former Disney child star was urged to seek help by those close to her amid concerns her partying was getting out of control. Meanwhile, TMZ claimed that Selena blames her ex-boyfriend Justin for her “predicament.”

Another source has told Radar, “Her friends and family became increasingly worried that there might be a serious problem with Selena. Particularly, her parents. The partying was, at times, wild. They wanted to help her – and they very much encouraged her to go to rehab. Others very close to her also urged her to seek professional help.”

Selena – who reportedly “regularly” smoked marijuana with Justin – had been due to tour Australia this month but cancelled the tour. At the time of the cancellation, it was reported that Selena was suffering from Lupus disease, although this was not confirmed or denied by her reps. In a statement to her fans about cancelling her shows, Selena said she needed to “spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be.”

She added, “My fans are so important to me and I would never want to disappoint them. But it has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be.”

At the time, a source close to the singer added that Gomez needed a break from her busy acting and touring schedule. “She’s been working nonstop since she was 15 and she wants to take a minute to herself,” the source said. She was said to be doing well. A source said, “Selena is now happy and very healthy and already getting back to work.”

As you may already have guessed, that’s not the end of the story.

Now it seems that she has tuned to alcohol after fleeing rehab just weeks ago. She apparently re-embraced alcohol by posting a happy hour selfie on Instagram. Selena’s photo of herself appears to show her drinking a cocktail amid addiction rumors.

It isn’t completely certain whether she was actually drinking alcohol or not, but the picture has caused some uproar, considering the fact that she so recently spent time in rehab. She quit after only two weeks into the 45-day program in order to go to Sundance and then said she was cured so she didn’t need to return. Her rep claims that she’s got no problems handling her alcohol.

It seems, however, as if she’s not paying much attention to the public conjecture and negative comments. “Extra whip cream please!” she posted alongside the photo with her drink. “Dessert before dinner. Duh.”

Instagram picture – any alcohol in that drink?

Unlike most other celebrities who undergo rehab “visits,” I’m actually hoping for the best for Selena. More often than not, when I’ve seen her interviewed, she has seemed like a pretty decent person – pretty much down to Earth, not full of herself, without the sort of over-inflated sense of self-worth that plagues so many celebrities – such as Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Jennifer Lopez, for example – so it’s somewhat disappointing to learn of her struggles. Normally I wouldn’t care very much, or have much sympathy for her situation, however self-inflicted it may be.  I’m hoping that there are people close to her who are concerned enough to try to ensure that she gets the kind of no-nonsense help she needs.

70s singing duo The Captain and Tennille getting divorced

Forever turned out to be a very finite 39 years. The Captain & Tennille, the 1970s singing duo who most notably sang “Love Will Keep Us Together,” are calling it quits after 39 years of marriage. captain-and-tennille_bandw

Toni Tennille, whose real name is Cathryn Antoinette Tennille, 73, filed for divorce from Daryl Dragon, known as the Captain, 71, on January 16, according to People magazine. The legal documents were filed in Arizona.

The Captain & Tennille were also best known for hits such as “Muskrat Love” and “Do That To Me One More Time.”  They were married in 1975, which is the same year they released their first album, titled, perhaps not surprisingly, “Love Will Keep Us Together.”  They were also well known for other hits such as “Muskrat Love” and “Do That To Me One More Time.”

In society in general, and in the entertainment world in particular, a 39 year marriage is highly praiseworthy.  I’d have to check, but I’d guess it’s possible that Elizabeth Taylor wasn’t married for 39 years with all of her marriages combined.  More recently, the examples speed by at an almost dizzying pace:  Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett; Britney Spears and Kevin Federline (and any other of her relationships that you can think of); Katy Perry and Russell Brand; Drew Barrymore and Tom Green

Captain_Tennille_2006 It seems that fans of the longtime couple weren’t the only ones surprised by news of the split. The Captain himself said he was surprised by his wife’s filing.  “I don’t know why she filed … I gotta figure it out for myself first,” he told TMZ.com, adding that the two still live together.

A message about their divorce was recently posted on their website:

“Until Thursday, January 16th, 2014, when Toni Tennile met with a DIVORCE ATTORNEY, in Phoenix, AZ, everything relating to THE CAPTAIN & TENNILLE appeared to the public as them being the ideal model for a ‘rock-solid’ married pair,” the statement read. “But almost all people naturally evolve over time, & sometimes hidden feelings start to be uncovered when one may read, just a little more into (the popularized, substitute heading appearing just below), stating, for instance: ‘MUSIC HAS KEPT THEM TOGETHER.”

Alec Baldwin’s late-night talk show canceled

November 26, 2013

Did you even know that he had a talk show?

Upon learning that his MSNBC talk show “Up Late With Alec Baldwin” had been canceled after only five episodes, the outburst-plagued actor spoke out about the cancellation and the incident that sparked it – and one of his critics has responded.

Baldwin became a focal point of controversy after a videotaped altercation with a reporter on a New York street appeared to show the actor telling the reporter off using a gay slur.  Although he has apologized for the comment, he has maintained that he never used a gay slur. But with the cancellation of his show, he is expressing frustration with those who criticized him, including GLAAD’s vice president of communications, Rich Ferraro.

“But you’ve got the fundamentalist wing of gay advocacy — Rich Ferraro and Andrew Sullivan — they’re out there, they’ve got you,” Baldwin told the website Gothamist. “Rich Ferraro, this is probably one of his greatest triumphs. They killed my show. And I have to take some responsibility for that myself.”

He added, “There’s nothing you can do when you get thrown in this washing machine, nothing. You know? Nothing. All you end up doing is just defending yourself all day long.”

Ferraro responded to Baldwin with a statement of his own, writing, “I consider GLAAD’s campaigns to end the Boy Scout of America’s ban on gay scouts, raise national visibility of the violence and inequality facing transgender people, and battling for marriage equality to be among my ‘greatest triumphs.’ But if a teacher, coach, local radio show host, or parent realizes that anti-LGBT slurs are outdated and unacceptable because of this Baldwin issue, I guess we’ll call it a win. Alec Baldwin’s team has not been open to turning this incident into an opportunity for public education and that’s unfortunate.”

In spite of his wide public visibility, Baldwin’s show on MSNBC struggled in the ratings, drawing just 395,000 viewers for what turned out to be its final episode on November 8th.  He is currently in Hawaii, where he is filming a role in director Cameron Crowe’s next movie, which is still untitled.

Kelsey Grammer’s wake up call

People Kelsey GrammerKelsey Grammer says his heart attack made him realize how precious his family is.

The former actor suffered the potentially fatal myocardial infarction last year and calls it a wake-up call to figure out what’s really important in life and not let work get in the way.

“Honestly, I’ve never felt better. I’m always concerned about going to work now because I’ve established such a connection with my family that’s different than it used to be when I was on ‘Frasier,’” he said.

“I started the family then and in the last five years I’ve spent a lot of time with them. So I find that more precious than I did before?it’s very important that the work not really intrude on that. So it’s a weird balancing act again.”

His eldest daughter Spencer, 25, has an acting career of her own and is now starring in TV show “Greek,” which his made Grammer even more proud.

“I always knew she’d do well. I want people to follow their own dreams and figure out their own lives. If she’d had been an astronaut I would’ve been happy,” said Grammer.

Redmond O’Neal promises to head to rehab for Farrah

RedmondOnealIn a tribute to his mother, Farrah Fawcett’s son Redmond O’Neal is trying to quit drugs for good. He’s planning to enroll in a substance abuse program as soon as he’s released from prison.

O’Neal, 24, is serving time at a California detention center, where he is undergoing intense treatment to kick his drug habit.

Fawcett’s best friend Alana Stewart said he is “doing well” and is on track to complete his rehab stint behind bars, which stems from an April arrest for drug possession.

He plans to go straight from his cell to another rehab facility once he’s freed.

“He’s doing amazingly well. Ryan goes to visit him every weekend and he’s really doing well. He’s in a rehab part of the jail and he’s going to go to a regular rehab after this,” said Stewart.

“He feels his mother’s with him; he feels her presence very strongly and he promised her in a phone call just before she died that he would never do drugs again, so I hope that he’s able to keep that promise,” added Stewart.

“He’s a very wonderful little man, he just had a drug problem.”

Fawcett lost her three-year struggle with anal cancer at age 62.

Mischa Barton on the road to another breakdown?

bartonMischa Barton is on “the verge of another breakdown,” according to unnamed friends.

“The Beautiful Life” actress was placed under involuntary psychiatric hold at Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center last month and now friends fear she has returned to work too quickly.

“There still are issues. Mischa’s just not herself at all. I think she’s gone back to work too soon,” said one source.

Another friend revealed to the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper: “She is on the verge of another breakdown – one I think could be even more serious than the last one. She cries for no reason.”

Barton headed to the set of “The Beautiful Life” just two days after being released from hospital.

According to reports, she was using drugs and alcohol to cope with money troubles and a tough love life.

Katie Holmes nearly hurt on movie set

holmesScientology nearly lost one of its sweethearts recently. Katie Holmes narrowly avoided serious injury after a car caught fire on the set of her new movie “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.”

She was reportedly shooting a scene in the vehicle when the battery exploded last weekend in Melbourne, Australia.

Holmes dashes from the car just before it burst into flames.

A source said: “Katie was inside a car when the vehicle’s battery exploded – it was sparking smoke and fumes before the car then caught fire.

“The exploding battery was not a part of the film.”

The film is a remake of a 1973 TV movie – Katie plays a woman who is stalked by wicked gnomes.

Before her near miss, Holmes said she was looking forward to filming.

“I’m really enjoying it. The movie is really character-driven. It’s really her journey becoming a mother. In the midst of that, there are unexpected scares,” she said.

Mischa Barton out of the hospital

Mischa-Barton1Two weeks after being placed under psychiatric hold, Mischa Barton is out of the hospital and is ready to head back to work.

“I can confirm that she’s left the hospital with the intention to resume production” of her new CW show “The Beautiful Life,” her rep Craig Schneider said.

After calling the police for “medical issues,” Barton was placed under involuntary psychiatric hold at L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center July 15.

But on Friday, Ashton Kutcher, a creator of “The Beautiful Life,” said Barton was recovering and expected her back to work soon.

“I can tell you right now Mischa Barton is doing great,” Kutcher told reporters at a technology conference in Pasadena, Calif.

Production on The Beautiful Life, which stars Barton , a former model, as an art-imitating-life pill-popping supermodel, is set to begin Friday.

Mischa Barton is great, says Kutcher

mischa-bartonMischa Barton is “doing great,” says Ashton Kutcher, creator of her new show “The Beautiful Life.” Kutcher said she’s ready to begin filming.

The actress was hospitalized for psychiatric observation last week, after suffering a meltdown and calling cops to her Los Angeles home the night before.

Reports were circulating that production was set to go on without her, but Kutcher denies that’s true.

He announced she will soon fly to New York to join the cast of the show, about a group of models.

Speaking at a technology conference in Pasadena, California on Friday, Kutcher said, “I can tell you right now Mischa Barton is doing great.”

The actress plays Sonja Stone, a catwalk beauty addicted to pills, on “The Beautiful Life,” which is scheduled to start filming on July 31.

No coke for Mischa Barton, says her rep

Mischa-BartonMischa Barton is denying her “medical issue” has anything to do with a three-day cocaine binge. She’s still in psychiatric lockdown, but her reps have called the rumor “preposterous”.

Barton, 23, was put on an involuntary psychiatric hold last week after cops went to her Los Angeles home.

A spokesperson has confirmed Barton received help for a “medical issue”, but has refused to comment further.

As a result of the lack of information, reports have circulated that she felt “suicidal” after three days of hard partying.

However, Barton’s rep has refuted the drug claims, telling Ok! magazine the reports are “completely preposterous”.

Barton’s mystery illness coughdrugaddictioncough has meant production of her TV series, “The Beautiful Life,” has been pushed back.

Beastie Boy Adam Yauch has cancer

The Beastie Boys have brought the rap for ages (and look much, much older than I remember them being) and sometimes it’s hard to remember they’re human.

But they are. Adam Yauch has announced he has cancer in his carotid gland (in his neck), which means surgery and chemo. It won’t affect his voice and they’ve caught it early, but still, not good news. The duo are canceling their upcoming tour dates and have postponed the planned album release. Our thoughts are with the Boys and we’re hoping for a quick recovery:

Coke binge caused Barton’s breakdown?

Mischa-BartonReports are circulating that Mischa Barton’s recent breakdown came after a three-day cocaine binge.

The former “O.C.” actress was placed on involuntary psychiatric hold Thursday after suffering a meltdown and calling cops to her Los Angeles home the day before.

According to New York Post gossip column PageSix, friends of Barton alerted police earlier, afraid she would kill herself after three days of hard partying.

“She’s in very bad shape. She’s running out of money and can’t find love, so now she is looking for a good time to escape her misery. She is on a downward spiral. She is a mess. She is a suicidal, uninsurable mess,” said a friend.

Los Angeles police and Barton’s representative have confirmed the actress required assistance for “a medical issue”, but have yet to reveal further details.

Ashton Kutcher’s ear drama

ashtonIt’s just injuries aplenty for young Hollywood lately. Ashton Kutcher is recovering from a ruptured eardrum that sent him to the hospital in the Bahamas earlier this month.

The actor was shooting scenes for his new movie, “Five Killers” in Nassau with Katherine Heigl when he complained of a severe headache.

He took a break from shooting but crew members sent him to a nearby medical center when they noticed he had a bloody ear, according to the National Enquirer.

His wife, Demi Moore, hauled ass to his bedside.

Fortunately for her, he was fine, joking around with medical staff and film assistants.

A source told the tabloid, “When Ashton saw Demi, he said cheerfully, ‘Hi, honey! I’m fine. Come join the party!’”

He was shortly allowed to fly to Georgia to finish working on Five Killers.

Kutcher refused to let his injury hold up production on the movie. The insider adds, “Ashton was a trooper. He didn’t even miss a day of filming.”

Mischa Barton kept on psychiatric hold

mischa-bartonPolice in Los Angeles were called to actress Mischa Barton’s home for “medical issues” Wednesday, according to an LAPD spokesperson.

Cops were asked to visit the former “O.C.” star’s home in Los Angeles after Barton reportedly called a non-911 number asking for help. A patrol car picked Barton up from her home and escorted her to an unknown location, according to Access Hollywood.

“We responded to her home last night on a medical issue,” Officer April Harding said. “We assisted with it. She was removed from her home.”

She’s been reportedly placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold (also known as a 5150, what Britney Spears was hauled in under back in 2008) by the Los Angeles Police Department and is currently at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The code gives authorities the power to hold her for up to 72 hours.

The hold means Barton will miss the premiere of her new movie, “Homecoming,” set for tonight in New York City.

Barton, who is set to star in this fall’s CW show “The Beautiful Life,” was previously charged with DUI and marijuana possession last year. She was sentenced by a Los Angeles court judge to 36 months probation, attend alcohol education classes and pay a fine.

LeVar Burton in car accident

levarDon’t worry, everyone, Geordi is just fine. Los Angeles police report actor LeVar Burton was involved in a five-car accident but wasn’t seriously hurt.

According to Detective Judy Acosta, Burton’s 2006 Mercedes was on Beverly Boulevard in West Los Angeles at about 7:40 p.m. Monday when a 74-year-old woman in a 2006 Scion turned left in front of him.

The cars collided and Burton’s vehicle then hit a parked car, according to the detective. That led to a chain reaction that damaged two other parked cars.

Both drivers complained of pain, then were examined at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and released. Nobody was ticketed.

Burton played one of my childhood crushes, Geordi LaForge, and hosted “Reading Rainbow” and must never, ever die.

Rupert Grint gets a bout of swine flu

grintIt’s no transfiguration spell. “Harry Potter” star Rupert Grint has contracted the infamous swine flu, just a few days shy of the London premiere of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” He’s expected to be well enough to attend the Tuesday event, according to his publicist.

Grint, 20, stars as Ron Weasley. He had to call in sick to the set of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” now filming in London and set for a 2010 release, but has since recovered.

“It has just been confirmed that Rupert Grint has taken a few days out of filming due to a mild bout of swine flu,” his publicist said in a statement Saturday.

“He has now recovered and is looking forward to joining his fellow cast members at the junket and premieres this week and will then return to filming directly afterwards,” she reports, adding that filming was able to continue as scheduled in Grint’s absence.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” opens in U.S. theaters July 17 and looks legitimately awesome.

Farrah Fawcett gets last rites

fawcett1Farrah Fawcett’s three-year battle with cancer may be near an end. The actress was re-admitted to hospital in California at the beginning of the week and, according to reports, a priest was called to Fawcett’s bedside in intensive care on Wednesday to read the devout Catholic her last rites.

“Extra” reported her 90-year-old father, James, is heading to her bedside, after being told she hasn’t got long to live.

Ryan O’Neal planned to wed her before she died (no word on whether that happened) and he’s trying to get a temporary jail release for a final goodbye for their son Redmond, who is serving time in a rehab jail on drugs charges.

Farrah Fawcett hospitalized

fawcettNo word on whether Ryan O’Neal and Farrah Fawcett were able to tie the knot before the bad news this afternoon. Fawcett, who is fighting cancer, has been hospitalized in California and is undergoing urgent treatment.

According to reports, the 62-year-old actress has been admitted to a clinic near her Los Angeles home.

“Entertainment Tonight” reported that Fawcett’s partner Ryan O’Neal is trying to get a temporary jail release for their son Redmond, so he can be by the Charlie’s Angels star’s bedside.

A representative for the star said, “We are not disclosing where she is at this time. She continues to be treated for her condition.”

In a TV interview, set to air on Friday, O’Neal said Fawcett is “fighting for her life” but that he plans to marry her as soon as she’s well enough to exchange vows.
